DIY Adult Mushroom Costume – Easy & Cheap

Searching for the ultimate adult mushroom costume?

My mushroom Halloween costume is, honestly, some of my best work.

After scrapping together a pretty cool Cleopatra costume from the year before, I knew I wanted something unique, comfortable, and a tad bit sexy. Something that would stand out in a sea of witches, cats, and Harley Quinns but still let me actually dance, and survive a chilly October night in New York.

And let’s be real: Halloween in NYC will never not be a massive deal. From wandering the haunted streets of Greenwich Village, to warehouse parties in Brooklyn, or spontaneous bar hopping in the East Village, your costume has to hold its own.

Pick Your Type of Mushroom

This was the hardest part of this costume!

While you can totally make this costume your own, I knew I wanted to stray from the cottagecore fairy type of mushroom and lean more into the psychedelic disco mushroom. I admittedly did get confused for the Mario mushroom, which wasn’t exactly what I was going for either.

Interestingly enough, my friend who I had planned this costume with had hippie glasses on, and she did not get confused with Mario, so I actually think glasses may be essential here.

I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on clothes, although it was where I was lacking most to pull this look together. So I chose to put most of my time on focusing on small, cheap accessories and makeup.

Amazon white bodysuit – $16

Reformation White Linen Skirt – $50 (or you could try this cheaper Amazon skirt for $15)

White GOGO Boots – $50

Mushroom Sweater Cardigan – $15

Light Up Mushroom Hat – $25

Mushroom Sunglasses – $13 (my friend had these and they look awesome)

Mushroom earrings – $5 (I actually got these earrings from Etsy because they said they were light up, but they weren’t, so any kind of mushroom earring will do).

Odds are you probably own some similar basics, like maybe a simple white shirt or skirt, or bodysuit, so you don’t really need to buy everything! I only spent about $45.

The felt pasties were a New York stoop find, the day of Halloween. Which I was so thankful for because my bodysuit is a bit scandalous.

Mushroom Makeup

Inspiration

Pulling together the mushroom makeup was the easiest part of the costume (and so much fun!)

I used a lottt of red blush across my cheeks and nose. You can also use a mix of blush and red eyeshadow.

For the specks, I used a white liquid eyeliner.

I am not the best at getting creative with eyeshadow, so I opted out of the red and white combo and just did my favorite Stila Liquid Eyeshadow Shimmer and black winged eyeliner.
