This post is all about my complete honest & non sponsored review of Wilfie & Nell NYC in the West Village.
I’ll be honest, I first started frequenting Wilfie & Nell because my west-side girlfriends swore to me that it was the spot to go for landing dates. Though Wilfie & Nell unfortunately doesn’t have a happy hour, it’s always busy (and swarming with men) whether it’s a weeknight or weekend.
Bars that are usually good for meeting guys (ehm sports bars, breweries) are rarely my jam. They are far too masculine and boring! Wilfie & Nell is a surprising exception to this stereotype. It’s a dimly lit, open-space bar with large community tables and an elaborate food & cocktail menu.
Wilfie & Nell is social by nature, which is its biggest pro and con. It’s a great place to meet people because there simply isn’t much seating. If you’re lucky, you can snag one of the limited bar spots or you can try your luck at sitting at one of the few tables.
This is one of those spots that is better on weeknights, rather than weekends.
About the Historic West Village Bar
Wilfie & Nell opened in 2008, and is named after the grandparents of co-owners and brothers, Mark and Simon Gibson, who hail from Ireland. They have photos of the grandparents posted behind the bar, I thought that was super cool!
Prior to establishing Wilfie & Nell, the Gibsons gained experience working in various bars and pubs across Ireland. In 2004, they opened their first establishment in New York City, and four years later, they realized their dream of creating an Irish pub that pays homage to their homeland.
The bar is part of the Sleeping Giant NY family, a group of independent gastropubs sprinkled around New York CIty such as The Bonnie, Bua, Sweet Afton, The Wren, and The Spaniard.
Honest Review of Wilfie & Nell
Everything you need to know about dining at Wilfie & Nell from where to sit, what booze to get, and what to to order.
Location
Wilfie & Nell is in the heart of the West Village, a neighborhood known for its historic charm, cobblestone streets, and intimate bars.
Located at 228 W 4th St, it sits on a quiet yet central corner, making it an easy stop whether you’re bar-hopping or looking for a cozy hideaway. The spot is just a short walk from the Christopher Street subway station, making it accessible while still feeling tucked away from the city’s usual hustle.
Ambiance
Wilfie & Nell embraces the charm of a classic New York gastropub with an inviting, low-lit interior that feels warm and familiar. Small but intimate, the bar is decorated with exposed brick walls, wooden tables, and dim lighting.
The bar itself is the centerpiece, drawing in both regulars and first-timers with its well-stocked selection of whiskey and craft cocktails. Seating is limited but they have options! There’s a mix of bar stools, booths, and communal tables that add to the social vibes. I think the mix of standing and communal tables is what really makes WIlfie & Nell a great place to meet people.
Whether you’re there for a quick drink or settling in for the evening, the setting makes it easy to unwind while enjoying well-crafted cocktails in a space that feels timeless yet unpretentious
Cocktails & Booze
I have had both amazing and horrible cocktails at Wilfie & Nell.
My go-to is always the delicious West of 7th cocktail which has vodka, elderflower, lemon, and prosecco. It’s so light and refreshing and one of my favorite cocktails in the city.
I didn’t care for the Bramble or Cucumber Gimlet, but some of the reviews really rave about the gimlet so maybe it’s just not for me!

One of the fabulous bartenders, Gershom, recently made me an espresso martini shot which was so good, I ordered another one.
Beyond cocktails, they offer a small but well-curated wine list and a wide selection of beers to suit different tastes.
While Scotch and Irish whiskey aren’t my thing, Wilfie & Nell has an extensive selection for those who appreciate a good pour.
Food
The food at Wilfie & Nell is actually really good. They offer affordable, large portions, and comfort food that is no frills.

I can’t come here without ordering the spinach artichoke dip to start. Coming from the Midwest, “spin dip” is literally on every restaurant menu. Here in NYC, I feel like you can’t find it anywhere! And boy do Wiflie & Nell cook it up right. It’s insanely delicious.
They have some other great appetizers too like scotch eggs, roasted Brussels sprouts, and fried cauliflower.
For mains, you can get anything from a steak sandwich, kale salad, burgers, or my favorite: fried chicken sandwich.

Prices
Despite being in the center of the West Village, Wiflie & Nell’s prices are super affordable.
Most of the food is around $16 and the portions are quite big.
Cocktails are all $14 or $15.
Beers are at a standard $9.
I think for the kind of ambiance and service the bar provides, this is a great price point and on the lower end of some other spots in the area.
Our check was around $115 for my friend and I as we both had a couple of cocktails, shared an appetizer, and each had a main.
Service
The service at Wilfie & Nell has always been top-notch. Even when the place is packed, the staff somehow still makes you feel seen and is so attentive.
I love sitting at the bar top, especially at a pub. Our bartender Gershom took amazing care of us.
What to Wear at Wilfie & Nell
This is an Irish pub so there’s no dress code! However you don’t want to feel out of place. It may be a pub, but it still has an upscale atmosphere between the rustic chic bar interior and dim lights.
A lot of the crowd here are business professionals (weekday) or people stopping for a bite before going out for the weekend. So, everyone is actually dressed pretty nice.
This is what I wore if it’s helpful!
Is Wilfie & Nell Worth a Visit?
Yes! Wilfie & Nell is definitely worth a visit, it’s one of my favorite spots in the city. Wilfie & Nell has a social vibe, delicious food, and amazing cocktails – it literally checks all the boxes!
The biggest con about Wilfie & Nell is it can be popular, so finding a spot at the bar or a table to sit at can be tricky. But standing here with a beer is really all part of the fun if you’re up for it.
